This collection consists of the doctoral research materials that Sandra Barty collected on the utopian community, Synanon, in southern California. It includes two dissertations, a comprehensive Synanon manual, primary and secondary source material about Synanon and other utopian societies, and many photographs.

Sandra Barty was a part-time member of Synanon from 1967 to 1970 and a full-time Synanon resident from 1970 to 1990. She received a doctorate in interdisciplinary studies from the Union Institute and University Graduate College (Cincinnati, Ohio) in 2003. Synanon was founded by Charles E.
